Kagame and UCI President Launch Tour du Rwanda 2025, Championing Cycling Development

KIGALI, RWANDA – President Paul Kagame, together with UCI President David Lappartient, officially launched the Tour du Rwanda 2025, signaling the start of the prestigious International cycling race.

This year marks the 17th edition since the race gained international status and the seventh since its elevation to UCI level 2.1.

The Tour du Rwanda, commencing this Sunday, February 23, 2025, will see 69 cyclists from 14 teams battle it out over eight grueling days.

The diverse field includes 39 riders from Africa, 26 from Europe, 3 from Asia and Oceania, and one representative from the U.S, promising a vibrant and competitive race.

The opening day featured a challenging 4.1-kilometer ‘Prologue’ – an Individual Time Trial – that started at the BK Arena and concluded at the Amahoro Stadium.

Cyclists tested their individual prowess, racing against the clock to establish an early advantage.

The launch of the Tour du Rwanda 2025 coincided with a significant commitment to the future of cycling in Rwanda.

UCI President David Lappartient, joined by UCI leaders including Jacques Landry, head of the UCI Satellite in South Africa, inaugurated a dedicated cycling development center in the country.

This center aims to nurture local talent and promote cycling participation across all levels.

In a further commitment to inclusivity, a program was also launched to promote cycling among refugee populations, offering opportunities and access to the sport for marginalized communities.

The Tour du Rwanda 2025 is set to be a showcase of athletic skill, but also a testament to Rwanda’s growing role as a hub for cycling development in Africa.
