Kigali, Rwanda – Last Month – In an emotional farewell party held in Kigali, Dr. Donatilla Kanimba, the Founder and retired Executive Director of the Rwanda Union of the Blind (RUB), delivered a heartfelt speech reflecting on her journey and the collective achievements of the organization over the years. The event, attended by colleagues, friends, and supporters, served as both a celebration of her contributions and a poignant reminder of the spirit of collaboration that has driven RUB’s mission.
Dr. Kanimba began her speech by expressing deep gratitude for the kind words shared by attendees. “I am very touched by all the things that have been said,” she remarked, emphasizing that her accomplishments were not solely her own but rather a reflection of the support and dedication of those around her. “If I stand this tall, it is because I stand on the shoulders of giants,” she stated, highlighting the interconnectedness of the individuals in the blind community and the collaborative effort necessary for progress.
Recalling her early days in school, she shared fond memories of her friendship with Dr. Beth Mukarwego, the current president of RUB. Together, they navigated the challenges of being among the few Rwandan students in a predominantly Kenyan school, forming a bond that transcended friendship. Through playful childhood activities, including slipping in mud puddles, they created their own vocabulary and solidarity, fostering resilience and joy during trying times.
Dr. Kanimba shared stories of her pivotal role in establishing RUB, recounting how discussions with fellow advocate Dr. James Ndahiro sparked the idea of forming an association to support the blind community in Rwanda. Despite facing challenges as refugees and navigating bureaucratic obstacles, they persevered, driven by a shared vision of independence and empowerment for blind individuals.

With a focus on creating a society where blind individuals are seen as capable contributors rather than “patients longing for death,” Dr. Kanimba championed initiatives that enabled blind individuals to take national exams and pursue their dreams. Her determination to reshape societal perceptions of disability was evident throughout her tenure, as she worked tirelessly to advocate for equal opportunities and independence for all.
Reflecting on the challenges faced along the way, Dr. Kanimba acknowledged the importance of various partnerships that aided RUB’s mission. She paid tribute to individuals and organizations that had supported her efforts, emphasizing that her success was not an isolated achievement but rather a collective victory shared by many.
While Dr. Kanimba looks forward to her retirement, she remains energized and committed to the cause. “I am ready to do any work that you call me to do,” she stated passionately, reinforcing her belief in lifelong service and purpose. As she anticipates a future of continued engagement, she reassured attendees that her spirit and dedication to the mission will persist.
In closing, Dr. Kanimba expressed her determination to live a life dedicated to service, stating, “I’m working for heaven but I’m not going there yet.” Her words resonated deeply with the audience, reminding everyone of the immeasurable impact one individual can have when supported by a community.
As the farewell party concluded, it was evident that Dr. Donatilla Kanimba’s legacy at the Rwanda Union of the Blind extends far beyond her years as Executive Director. Her commitment to empowerment, collaboration, and social change has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the lives of countless individuals, and her vision will continue to inspire future generations in the fight for equality and dignity for all.
