Kwibuka31: Arsenal Joins Rwanda in Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi

English Premier League club Arsenal has joined Rwandans in commemorating the 31st anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The North London club, which maintains a partnership with Rwanda under the “Visit Rwanda” campaign—alongside French champions Paris Saint-Germain and German giants Bayern Munich—shared a message of remembrance and solidarity via social media on Monday.

“Kwibuka means ‘to remember’. Today we mark the 31st commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda,” read Arsenal’s post, honouring the more than one million lives lost during the 100-day tragedy.

Over the years, several Arsenal players, staff, and management have visited Rwanda, including stops at genocide memorial sites, where they have learned about the country’s painful history and the resilience that followed.

In 2023, Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber made a visit to Rwanda, including a stop at the Kigali Genocide Memorial. Moved by the experience, he encouraged young Rwandan athletes to honour the memory of their loved ones while striving to achieve their goals and contribute to the nation’s future.
