Shenmo Hosts 3rd Annual Mental Math Competition to Boost Cognitive Skills Among Rwandan Children
Musanze District, Rwanda — On Saturday, May 31, 2025, Shenmo Education Rwanda in partnership with the Rwanda Basic Education Board hosted its third annual Abacus Mental Math competition, an event aimed at demonstrating the benefits of mental arithmetic among schoolchildren across the country.
The event attracted 254 students from 11 schools, including six international, three private, and two public institutions, all from Primary 1 to 6. The competition was held at Rwanda Polytechnic Musanze College, drawing significant interest from educators, parents, and local officials.
Participants reported that engaging in mental math activities enhances their ability to think clearly and respond swiftly. Iraguha Cyusa Alvin, a young competitor, shared with journalists, “These competitions help us to think clearly, maintain concentration, remember quickly, and gain self-confidence.”
Another participant, Gakumba Ishya of GS APACOPE, emphasized the positive impact of Abacus training: “It helps us focus more on what we are doing. If we are not concentrated, we cannot answer correctly. Abacus makes mathematics fun and helps us understand it better, even for children who usually don’t like math.”
Organized by Shenmo Education Rwanda in partnership with the Rwanda Basic Education Board (REB), the event seeks to foster cognitive development and interest in mathematics among young learners.

Uwitonze Brigitte, Principal of Shenmo Education Rwanda, highlighted the cognitive benefits of the program: “Abacus Mental Math improves mental concentration, enhances focus, and contributes to significant brain development compared to children not enrolled in the program.”

Mugabowagahunde Maurice, Governor of the Northern Province, stated, “These competitions support children’s academic progress and boost their confidence, which is vital for their overall development.”
Mrs. Sengati Uwasenga Diane, representing the Director General of REB and head of ICT in Education, praised the initiative: “On behalf of REB, I commend Shenmo Education Rwanda for organizing such an inspiring event. The energy and talent of these children are truly remarkable. We appreciate the efforts to cultivate a love for math at a young age.”
