Mogadishu, Somalia, June 11, 2025-In a major step toward regional cooperation and economic growth, Somalia has successfully hosted the Horn of Africa Economic Integration Summit in Mogadishu—marking a historic first for the nation since assuming the chairmanship of the Horn of Africa Initiative.
The high-level two-day forum, launched by Somalia’s Federal Minister of Finance H.E. Bihi Iman Egeh, brought together key government representatives from Djibouti, Kenya, and South Sudan, who attended in person, while senior officials from Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Sudan participated virtually. The summit aims to deepen economic ties and boost trade integration across one of Africa’s most strategically important regions.
Minister Bihi, joined by the Minister of Commerce H.E. Mahmoud Adan Gessood and other senior officials, welcomed delegates with a message of unity and determination. In his opening remarks, he emphasized the urgent need to strengthen intra-regional cooperation and unlock the region’s economic potential.
“This technical-level meeting is a cornerstone for deepening economic integration among the Horn of Africa nations,” said Minister Bihi. “Trade and investment are key to our collective economic growth and the creation of sustainable jobs for our people.”
Currently, intra-regional trade among Horn of Africa nations accounts for just 6% of overall trade—a figure the summit seeks to improve through collaborative strategies and infrastructure development.
This landmark summit not only showcases Somalia’s leadership in regional affairs but also reflects a broader commitment to building a more self-reliant and resilient economy, reducing reliance on foreign aid, and fostering long-term development.
The summit marks a new era of cooperation and shared prosperity in the Horn of Africa, highlighting the growing momentum for unity and progress in the region.
