Somalia’s Minister of Interior and UN Envoy Discuss Elections and Reconciliation Efforts in the country

Mogadishu, Somalia – June 11, 2025 – Somalia’s Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation, Hon. Ali Yusuf Ali (Hoosh), met today with the United Nations Special Representative for Somalia, Ambassador James Swan, for high-level discussions aimed at advancing peace, democratic governance, and national unity.

Held at the Ministry’s headquarters in Mogadishu, the meeting centered on accelerating joint efforts to stabilize the country, strengthen reconciliation initiatives, and enhance Somalia’s electoral process. 

Both leaders also discussed the importance of expanding access to public services to reinforce the foundations of effective and inclusive governance.

Minister Hoosh and Ambassador Swan reaffirmed the critical role of strong cooperation between the Federal Government of Somalia and the United Nations. 

Also, they highlighted the need for continued collaboration in state-building efforts and emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum toward long-term peace and development.

Minister Xoosh expressed appreciation for the UN’s ongoing support, describing the partnership as vital to Somalia’s progress and resilience. “The consistent support of the United Nations plays a significant role in helping Somalia move forward,” he noted.

The meeting comes at a pivotal moment, following President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s recent call for a national consultative dialogue aimed at fostering unity and addressing key national challenges. However, some opposition groups have voiced objections to the initiative and are reportedly organizing a separate conference in Nairobi, Kenya, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Despite political differences, the government remains committed to inclusive dialogue and cooperation with all stakeholders to ensure peace and stability in Somalia.
