Satellite Network Expansion Driven by Demand for Reliability and Coverage

A new white paper titled “Satellite Networks: Expanding Reach, Reliability, and Performance” analyzes a 2025 survey revealing key trends in satellite connectivity. The report, produced by Heavy Reading (now part of Omdia) for Intelsat, highlights the increasing importance of satellite solutions for enterprises seeking uninterrupted network access and expanded coverage.

Key Findings:

  • Uninterrupted Access: 81% of enterprises surveyed believe network outages would negatively impact their operations or customer experience. Performance, reliability, and scalability are top priorities.
  • Backup Connectivity: 68% of enterprises consider secondary/backup network connectivity the most strategic application for satellite solutions in the next two years. Remote land coverage (60%) and expanded IoT coverage (56%) also rank high.
  • Satellite Service Growth: 87% of respondents anticipate increased relevance or growth opportunities for satellite services in the coming two years, driven by improved availability and affordability.

Connectivity Priorities:

Enterprises prioritize “performance, reliability, and scalability” in their network connectivity solutions, followed by coverage and bandwidth. This indicates a need for solutions that can maintain operations, even with lower bandwidth capacities.

Enterprise Strategies:

A combined 87% of enterprises see potential for satellite services in the future.

  • 42% of enterprises have never used satellite services but believe they may become relevant to their business. *28% of enterprises have never used satellite services but are actively looking at satellite service options.
  • 17% of enterprises already using satellite services see areas for growth involving more satellite services.

Use Cases:

Satellite connectivity is seen as extending coverage to remote locations, providing temporary access solutions, and offering secondary/backup uplinks. The most useful applications within the next two years are:

  • Secondary/backup enterprise connectivity (68%).
  • Remote land coverage (60%).
  • Expanded IoT coverage (56%).

Regional Adoption:

Enterprises identify Asia & Oceania (58%), the US (57%), and Central/South America (52%) as key regions for satellite connectivity expansion in the next two years. This is driven by the need to overcome geographic barriers and provide connectivity in underserved regions.

Conclusion:

Network resilience has become a critical business imperative, positioning satellite solutions as a strategic investment for backup connectivity, remote coverage, and IoT expansion.
