United States Withdraws from UNESCO

Press Statement by Tammy Bruce, Department Spokesperson
July 22, 2025

In a significant move, the United States has announced its decision to withdraw from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The announcement was made today through a formal communication to UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, citing that continued involvement in the organization is not aligned with American interests.

The U.S. government expressed concerns over UNESCO’s focus and actions, particularly its promotion of social and cultural causes deemed divisive. Additionally, the statement criticized UNESCO’s emphasis on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, describing them as part of a “globalist, ideological agenda” that conflicts with the America First foreign policy approach.

A pivotal reason for the withdrawal is UNESCO’s decision to admit the “State of Palestine” as a Member State, a move that the U.S. considers highly problematic and contrary to its policies. The statement also highlighted concerns over rising anti-Israel rhetoric within the organization, which U.S. officials believe undermines its credibility.

The Department of State affirmed that future U.S. participation in international organizations will prioritize advancing American interests with “clarity and conviction.”

pursuant to Article II(6) of the UNESCO Constitution, the withdrawal will officially take effect on December 31, 2026. Until then, the United States will continue to be a full member of UNESCO.

This decision marks a notable shift in U.S. engagement with international bodies, emphasizing a more cautious and interests-focused approach to global cooperation.
