Rwanda’s Parliament Condemns European Parliament Resolution on Victoire Ingabire Case

Kigali, September 16, 2025 — The Parliament of Rwanda publicly expressed strong disapproval of the European Parliament’s resolution of September 11, 2025, concerning the case of Victoire Ingabire. In a formal statement, Rwandan lawmakers underscored the sovereignty and independence of the nation, emphasizing that external interventions in its judicial and political affairs violate both the United Nations Charter and international law.

The Rwandan Parliament recalled its previous resolution of October 6, 2016, reaffirming the country’s commitment to democratic principles, rule of law, and a multiparty political system. It highlighted that Rwanda’s judiciary operates independently, safeguarding human rights and freedoms in accordance with constitutional and international standards.

Addressing the specifics of the Ingabire case, Parliament noted that she was previously convicted of various crimes, later granted a presidential pardon, and is currently facing new legal proceedings. The lawmakers condemned the European Parliament’s resolutions as attempts to interfere with Rwanda’s judicial processes, which they described as an affront to judicial independence and democratic principles.

The statement further criticized the European Parliament’s depiction of the case, alleging that it relies on partial and subjective information influenced by political adversaries of Rwanda. Such actions, according to the Rwandan Parliament, aim to undermine Rwanda’s development, sovereignty, and international reputation.

In closing, the Parliament of Rwanda called for mutual respect, good faith, and accountability in international relations and development partnerships. The resolution was forwarded to key international and regional bodies, including the European Union, the African Union, the United Nations, and the Rwandan government, to reiterate Rwanda’s stance on sovereignty and non-interference.
