Belgian Priest died in Rwanda
Kigali-Rwanda: On June 25, 2025, the salesians of Don Bosco, religious community and friends gathered to bid farewell to Father Pareyn Hugo, a man of order, prayer, youthfulness, and unwavering dedication. His passing, after a courageous battle with throat cancer, marked the end of an extraordinary journey of faith and service.
The funeral service preceded by a heartfelt holy mass celebrating the life of Father Hugo. Known for his humility, simplicity, and deep commitment to his mission, he inspired many through his unwavering faith and dedication.
In his final days, those close to him observed a peaceful and content spirit. Father Hugo was at peace, eager to leave his earthly body behind, confident that he was bound for Heaven. He leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and service that continues to inspire.
Following the mass, his body was transported to the cemetery located at Don Bosco Kabgayi Community House, where he now laid to rest.
Born in Belgium, in 1933, Father Hugo dedicated his life to following God’s calling. After studying carpentry and completing military service, he answered the call to the Salesian vocation, beginning his religious journey in 1959.
As a Salesian of Don Bosco, Father Hugo traveled across several African countries—Congo, Burundi, and finally Rwanda—where he devoted his life to education, youth training, and prayer. His unwavering commitment to service made him a beloved figure in each community he served.
Since 2009, Father Hugo focused on training novices, generously sharing his faith and experience with a new generation of Salesian brothers across Africa. He celebrated his 50th year of religious life in 2010 and his Golden Jubilee of priesthood in 2018.
In his last months, weakened by illness, Father Hugo chose to remain in Rwanda, where access to quality medical care allowed him to spend his final days living in faith and hope. His fellow priests, friends, and community members frequently visited him, praying and offering support. Despite his frailty, he participated fervently in Masses, including those on Pentecost and Trinity Sunday.
On June 17, during a visit with Sister Gisèle and another FMA sister, Father Hugo, already in declining health, blessed his visitors and prayed with fervor, entrusting his life to Saint Joseph. That night, around 10:30 pm, he peacefully departed this life to join his Creator.
Father Hugo’s remarkable life spanned over 90 years, including more than 50 years of religious vows and 57 years of priestly ministry—an enduring testament to love, faith, and sacrifice.
Father Provincial Gabriel Ngendakuriyo reflected, “As I shared when we bade farewell to Sister Lumière who recently passed away, we also pray for Father Hugo and also ask that he prays for us. May he intercede for us as we compassionately walk the path of consecrating our lives to God.”
His legacy continues to inspire, reminding us of the power of faith, devotion, and service in shaping a better world.
