U.S. Applauds Historic Step Toward Peace in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Washington, D.C., July 19, 2025 — The United States has welcomed the signing of a groundbreaking Declaration of Principles between the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and representatives of the Congo River Alliance/March 23 Movement, marking a significant stride toward peace and stability in the volatile Great Lakes region.

The agreement, facilitated by Qatar and observed by U.S. officials, underscores a shared commitment to ending ongoing conflicts and fostering dialogue among warring parties. In a statement, Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce praised the effort, saying, “This meaningful step reflects the collective resolve of the parties to work toward a lasting peace that benefits all residents of the region.”

The U.S. also expressed appreciation for Qatar’s vital role in mediating the talks, noting their leadership in fostering constructive dialogue. This development follows the June 27, 2025, peace agreement between the DRC and Rwanda in Washington, D.C., further emphasizing regional efforts toward stability and reconciliation.

While welcoming this progress, the United States urged the parties to uphold their commitments and continue discussions toward a comprehensive peace deal. “We remain committed to supporting the DRC in restoring authority and promoting inclusive governance,” said Bruce. “Our goal is for the people of eastern DRC to return home safely and enjoy a more prosperous future.”

As regional diplomacy advances, international support remains crucial in turning these agreements into tangible peace and long-term stability for the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
