Rwanda’s Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva Urges Farmers to Boost Crop Yields to 10 Tons per Hectare

On September 22, 2025, Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva emphasized the importance of efficient farming practices to meet Rwanda’s goal of doubling agricultural production. During the launch of the 2026 Agriculture season at the national level, he urged farmers to aim for a target of 10 tons per hectare.

The 2026 A Agric. season officially kicked off in Nyaruguru District, Nyagisozi Sector, with maize planting in the Urwonjya Swamp, which spans 115 hectares. This natural swamp, where potatoes and maize are alternately cultivated, is managed by 1,742 farmers belonging to the Abishyye Hamwe Urwonjya Cooperative.

Dr. Nsengiyumva acknowledged the progress made, noting that farmers have increased their yield from one ton to five tons per hectare. He encouraged them to push further, stating, “You are no longer just basket makers; now you are packing and sending baskets to others.” He expressed confidence that yields could be doubled again, reaching 10 tons per hectare, and challenged farmers to make this their collective promise.

Highlighting the importance of innovation in agriculture, he urged farmers to expand cultivation into different terrains—including swamps, mountains, and valleys—and to adopt better farming practices. “To achieve higher yields, we must cultivate all areas effectively, grow quality seeds, and use organic fertilizers and compost,” he said.

He also emphasized the need for irrigation in water-deficient areas, particularly in swamps, to prevent crop loss during dry spells. For regions with limited water resources, he recommended planting crops that grow quickly, like beans, or those that require less water, such as cassava.

Dr. Nsengiyumva reminded farmers that these strategies are vital for realizing Rwanda’s vision of doubled agricultural output and improving the livelihoods of those working in the sector. “Doubling production will increase income and mutual funds. Don’t forget the crop insurance provided by the government, which will support you during difficult times,” he added.
