Katerina Syngellakis’s Week in Rwanda: A Powerhouse of Green Initiatives and Commemoration
By TOP AFRICA NEWS Reporter
This week, Rwanda experienced the powerful presence of international leadership in sustainability as Katerina Syngellakis, Regional Director for Africa at the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), embarked on an intensive and impactful visit to the country. Her week was packed with high-level engagements, field visits, and moments of reflection, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to Rwanda’s green development and resilience.

Her journey began with a deeply moving visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where Syngellakis paid tribute to the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Joined by Caroline C. Raes, GGGI Rwanda’s Country Representative, she laid a wreath as a symbol of remembrance, unity, and hope—the act highlighting her leadership in fostering peace and solidarity while maintaining a busy schedule.
Following this, Syngellakis dedicated her time to exploring Rwanda’s environmental progress, touring the Nduba Landfill’s Waste Valorization Facilities—an innovative project supported by GGGI and funded by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. She engaged actively with local stakeholders on how turning waste into resources is transforming Rwanda’s circular economy.
Her exploration also led her to Nyandungu Eco-Park, Kigali’s first urban wetland restoration project. Her interactions underscored the importance of ecological conservation, biodiversity, and urban resilience—key elements of Rwanda’s sustainable development narrative.
Throughout her visit, she held strategic meetings with Rwanda’s Minister of Environment, REMA officials, and development partners from the African Development Bank and LuxDev. Discussions focused on strengthening green investments, empowering youth and women in the green economy, and advancing the country’s climate action agenda, reflecting her dedication to concrete sustainable solutions.
In addition, she met with key stakeholders from Mastercard Foundation and other organizations to explore innovative ways to foster inclusive green growth and green infrastructure development.
Her journey this week has been a testament to her dedication—every visit, discussion, and moment of reflection illustrates her commitment to supporting Rwanda’s green aspirations. The week remains vibrant with activity and momentum, with Syngellakis actively working alongside Rwandan partners to turn the country’s green vision into lasting impact.
