The Importance of Faithful Witness in Challenging Times and the Influence of Modern, Rapidly Evolving Media
As the Catholic Church in Rwanda celebrated the Jubilee of the Laity at the national level on Saturday, November 8, 2025, Bishop Papias Musengamana of the Diocese of Byumba emphasized that Christians today must actively bear witness to their faith within their families and communities. He highlighted that these are challenging times when both the world and the Church face threats of change and apostasy, particularly through the influence of modern, rapidly evolving media.
The Bishop of Byumba pointed out that modern media often serve as platforms for promoting various activities, some of which oppose God, the Church, and its followers. He warned, “We live in a world where media outlets are widely disseminated and even encouraged to spread messages that fight against God, the Church, and its people.”
Mgr Musengamana called for steadfastness of heart, urging Christians not to be swayed by ideas that contradict the Word of God—especially those propagated through the media. He stressed that today’s Christians must hold firmly to the Word and demonstrate their faith through everyday actions.
In his sermon, the Bishop reflected on the current challenges facing the world and the faithful, noting that many are increasingly abandoning their faith in favor of their own ideas, rather than listening to God’s Word.
He stated, “Brothers and sisters in Christ, as we celebrate the Jubilee of the Incarnation amidst difficult times in the history of our world and Church, we witness a period of change in perceptions, lifestyles, and practices. These often show denial, resistance, and rejection of God and His teachings.”
Bishop Musengamana concluded by underscoring that authentic Christianity is not merely a matter of name but is demonstrated through daily actions and attitudes. He urged that this Jubilee should be a time for self-examination—a moment to reflect on whether we, as Christians, are truly being salt and light in a society marred by discrimination and apostasy.
