Kigali to Host 20th Plenary Assembly of SECAM on Hope, Reconciliation, and Peace
Fridolin Cardinal Ambongo Besungu. President of SECAM
Kigali, Rwanda — The city of Kigali is preparing to host a significant religious gathering as the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) convenes its 20th Plenary Assembly from July 30 to August 4, 2025. Themed “Christ, Source of Hope, Reconciliation, and Peace,” the event will bring together bishops, clergy, religious, and laity from across the continent to reflect on the vital role of the Church in addressing the continent’s pastoral challenges and fostering hope.
The Plenary Assembly, held every three years, offers a unique opportunity for Catholic Church leaders from across Africa and Madagascar to come together and deeply consider the Church’s mission, especially in navigating the current pastoral landscape.
Delegates from various countries are expected to participate, including representatives from nations with diverse diocesan structures. The assembly aims to serve as a platform for dialogue, unity, and strategic planning centered on issues such as peace-building, reconciliation, social justice, and hope — values that are critical in Africa’s continued growth and healing.
As the event approaches, expect important declarations and commitments that will shape the Church’s pastoral work and social engagement throughout Africa and Madagascar in the years ahead.
