Mogadishu, June 6, 2025—As Muslims around the world celebrate Eid al-Adha, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre have delivered heartfelt messages to the Somali people, calling for national unity, forgiveness, and steadfastness in the ongoing fight against Al-Shabaab.
In his Eid address, President Mohamud congratulated the nation and emphasized the values of compassion, solidarity, and mutual support that define the spirit of Eid. He urged citizens to extend help to those in need, forgive one another, and stay alert in the face of persistent threats posed by the militant group Al-Shabaab.

“The Khawarij have spilled the blood of our people and looted our nation. They are the main obstacle to Somalia’s peace and progress,” President Mohamud said, using the term “Khawarij” to describe the extremist group.
He also offered a path to peace, announcing a presidential amnesty for young members of Al-Shabaab willing to surrender and reintegrate into society.

“On this blessed day, any youth within Al-Shabaab who wants to return to their people will be granted amnesty. This is an opportunity for peace and reconciliation,” he said.
President Mohamud reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to finalizing Somalia’s provisional constitution and transitioning the country toward direct elections—an essential milestone in strengthening democracy.
“We cannot remain stagnant with a draft constitution and an indirect voting system for three decades. The national dialogue platform remains open and will always be open to all,” he declared.
He also expressed deep appreciation for the Somali National Army and local community forces who continue to risk their lives in the fight against terrorism, praising their courage and sacrifice.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre echoed the President’s sentiments, extending Eid greetings to Somalis at home and abroad, with special recognition for the armed forces on the front lines.
“We salute our valiant armed forces who defend our religion, our country, and our people. Their sacrifices are the foundation of our national security and our future,” said the Prime Minister.
The leaders’ messages come amid intensified military operations across Somalia and ahead of the upcoming National Consultation Forum, scheduled for June 15, 2025—an important moment for shaping the country’s political direction.
