As the world rallies to address the urgent crises of biodiversity loss and climate change, Rwanda is gearing up to further solidify its commitment to environmental sustainability through active engagement with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The much-anticipated IUCN World Conservation Congress, scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi in October, will serve as a key platform for Rwanda’s continued collaboration with the global conservation organization.

Rwanda’s remarkable progress in environmental stewardship over recent years has been driven by the dedicated efforts of various partners including IUCN Rwanda, which has established a strong foundation in landscape restoration, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable land management.

Since opening its office in 2016, IUCN Rwanda has been at the forefront of pioneering projects aimed at restoring ecosystems, supporting sustainable agriculture, and managing vital water resources—work that has attracted significant funding and partnerships. From expanding a team of 3 to over 30 full-time staff, IUCN Rwanda has laid a solid foundation to tackle the country’s pressing environmental challenges.

The organization has also been instrumental in positioning Rwanda as a regional leader in ecosystem management and biodiversity conservation.

Its ambitious 10-year strategy emphasizes ecosystem restoration, sustainable agriculture, water investment, and innovative climate finance—areas critical to Rwanda’s development trajectory. The organization’s projects have grown exponentially, with a portfolio now valued at approximately €70 million (2022), showcasing Rwanda’s increasing role as a hub of impactful environmental initiatives.

On the diplomatic front, IUCN Rwanda’s legal status and host country agreement with the government of Rwanda have elevated its influence and strategic partnerships within the country. The organization’s work aligns closely with Rwanda’s national priorities, including the sustainable management of the Congo Basin’s vast forest resources and the restoration of degraded lands, which account for nearly 1 billion hectares across Africa.

Rwanda’s continued engagement with IUCN at the Abu Dhabi Congress will be crucial. The upcoming event offers an unparalleled opportunity for Rwanda to showcase its environmental achievements, forge new partnerships, and align its initiatives with global climate and biodiversity targets.

Experts believe that Rwanda’s discussions at the summit are expected to focus on innovative solutions for climate resilience, sustainable land use, and biodiversity conservation—areas where Rwanda’s pioneering efforts can serve as models for the region.

Rwanda’s collaboration with IUCN was also evident recently during a high-level meeting at the Africa Climate Summit, where IUCN Regional Director Luther Anukur met with Rwanda’s Minister of Environment, Dr. Bernadette Arakwiye. The leaders discussed ongoing projects and future collaboration opportunities, reaffirming their shared commitment to advancing Rwanda’s environmental agenda.
