Nyagatare’s Green Revolution: Community Mobilizes to Plant 17,600 Trees for Climate Resilience and Ecosystem Health

During a community Work held in Gatunda Sector, Nyangara Cell, Matumba Village in Nyagatare District, Part of the Eastern Province of Rwanda, residents were encouraged to prioritize sustainable land management by planting at least 10 trees per household.

Highlighting the vital role of reforestation, Nyagatare District Mayor Gasana Stephen emphasized that tree planting is an urgent environmental action that should involve every household. He stated, “Planting trees is planting life. It helps attract rainfall, purify the air, prevent soil erosion, and combat climate change. Every citizen has a responsibility to contribute to this collective effort for a healthier planet and a sustainable future.”

Residents expressed strong support for this initiative, recognizing the multiple ecological benefits. Mukandoli Vestine, a local participant, remarked, “Trees provide clean air, reduce temperatures, and create a safe environment for our children. Their presence is essential for ecological balance.”

Similarly, Habimana Jean Claude shared that afforestation is a critical solution to combat erosion and drought. He explained, “Planting more trees enhances rainfall and stabilizes the soil, mitigating the impacts of climate variability. We are committed to supporting this vital environmental conservation program.”

This community-driven Work involved digging planting holes in preparation for 17,600 trees across an 11-hectare area. This effort represents a significant step toward increasing local forest cover, reducing heat islands, and improving climate resilience in the region.
